What Are Engine Valve Cover Bolts?

Engine valve cover bolts are specialized fasteners designed to secure the engine valve cover to the top of the cylinder head. They maintain pressure on the gasket to keep motor oil inside the engine.Without them, oil would spray onto the hot exhaust manifold.

The Anatomy of Valve Cover Bolts

Valve cover bolts are not ordinary screws found in hardware stores.Manufacturers specifically design them to accommodate the thermal expansion characteristics of engines. They must remain securely fastened throughout the engine’s heating and cooling cycles.

Most modern bolts feature a “shoulder” or stop structure. This design prevents washers from being compressed and deformed. When the bolt reaches the shoulder, the compression action stops, ensuring the washer maintains a perfect seal without damage.Additionally, rubber bushings can be installed beneath the bolt head. These bushings function as micro-seals while effectively absorbing vibrations.

Types of Valve Cover Bolts

  • Shoulder Bolt:
Features a wide threadless section to limit depth.Suitable for most modern plastic caps.
  • Stud and Nut:
The threaded rod is secured within the cylinder head;the nut locks the cylinder head in place.Designed for older engines and heavy-duty trucks.
  • Flange Bolt:
Features an integrated washer base for enhanced grip. For use with aluminum or magnesium valve covers.
  • Grommet Bolt:
Designed to pass through rubber sealing gaskets. Perfect for engines prone to vibration.

Why Proper Torque is Critical for Valve Cover Bolts

Valve cover bolts require very little torque.Usually, the specification is in “inch-pounds,” not “foot-pounds.”

If you overtighten them, two bad things happen.
First, you might crack the cover, especially if it is plastic. This leads to a permanent leak.
Second, you can snap the bolt head off.Removing a broken bolt from an aluminum cylinder head is difficult and costly.

Additionally, excessive tightening can over-compress the gasket, causing it to bulge and leak.If oil leakage is detected, never attempt to resolve it solely by increasing bolt torque. This likely indicates a valve cover gasket leak, requiring replacement with a new seal.

Common Problems with Valve Cover Bolts

  • Corrosion:
Humid environments cause rust to form on bolt heads, making them difficult to remove.
  • Stretching:
Repeated tightening stretches the metal threads. Stretched bolts cannot withstand torque.
  • Loosening:
Vibration may cause valve cover bolts to loosen slightly, leading to oil leaks.

How to Tighten Valve Cover Bolts Correctly

You must follow a specific pattern when installing these bolts.Never tighten them in a circle.Instead, use a “crisscross” or “star” pattern.Start from the center of the cover and work your way out. This spreads the pressure evenly across the gasket.
Engine MaterialTypical Torque SpecWarning
Plastic Cover7 – 9 Newton Meters (Nm)Very easy to crack. Hand tighten first.
Aluminum Cover9 – 12 Newton Meters (Nm)Do not strip the head threads.
Steel Cover6 – 10 Newton Meters (Nm)Ensure the flange is flat.
